Team Geek Ch. 3 Reflection

Chapter Three basically discussed leadership and the different types of leaderships that are effective and ineffective. The difference between a leader and manager I feel is very effective because a manager worries about how things get done, while a leader worries about what will get done. The issue was discussed on the fact that engineers don't always want to be team leaders for fear of not being able to not write code as much, but people with the impatient personality will tend to lead naturally anyways, so you could essentially wind up "accidentally" becoming a leader. Tips were given in terms of the leader's perspective of hiring as well, which included what NOT to do in order to have an effective, hard-working, equal team. One aspect of hiring that I found to be difficult if I were in that position, would be to seek to replace yourself. It's sometimes hard to measure ourselves to someone else to see if they could replace me someday, because it is in my nature to treat everyone equally. The final point that I found to be useful was the extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside sources (ex. monetary sources), while intrinsic motivation comes from within ourselves. In order to promote intrinsic motivation in workers you, as a leader, must give people autonomy (employee acts on their own without micromanaging them), mastery (give engineer opportunity to learn new skills and improve existing skills), purpose (give a reason to do the work).
